Gary Adams gründete TaylorMade im Jahre 1979 als Ein-Mann-Unternehmen. Im gleichen Jahr kam sein erster Golfschläger auf den Markt. Dieser neuartige Driver aus Metall machte TaylorMade schlagartig zum Marktführer. Neben Callaway und der Acushnet Company (Titleist, Footjoy) ist TaylorMade der umsatzstärkste Golfausrüster weltweit. 1984 kaufte der Wintersportspezialist Salomon die kleine Firma TaylorMade. Zum sportlichen Erfolg kam das zur Expansion nötige Kapital. 1998 wurde Salomon, und damit auch TaylorMade an die Adidas AG verkauft. Heute ist TaylorMade eine Tochter von Adidas mit Sitz in Carlsbad (Kalifornien, USA). Eine traditionell starke Stellung hat TaylorMade bei Drivern. Mit Fairway Hölzern, Rescues, Eisen, Wedges und Puttern wird die komplette Palette an Schlägern hergestellt. TaylorMade bietet ein breites Angebot wie Handschuhe, Bags, Kappen und weitere Golfaccessoires. 2008 erwarb man mit Ashworth Inc. einen Spezialisten in Golfbekleidung.
